The Trash Bag Challenge: A Quick and Easy Declutter Win

The simplest way to start decluttering is to make it quick.
No overthinking. No perfection. Just one bag, one timer, and one easy win.
That is why I love the Trash Bag Challenge. It takes the pressure off and helps you make fast decisions without getting stuck wondering what to keep. The goal is momentum, not a full weekend clean-out or a magazine-ready after photo.
Here is how it works:
Grab one trash bag. Set a 10-minute timer. Fill the bag with either trash or items to donate. That is it.
Most of the things we toss into this first bag are decisions we have already made in our heads. We simply have not taken action yet. This challenge gives you a quick win that instantly makes your space feel lighter.
What You Can Put in Your Bag
Keep it simple. Aim for the obvious items, avoid anything sentimental, and go for the easy wins.
Expired pantry items
Torn or outgrown kids clothing
Chipped dishes or mismatched containers
Old bath products you no longer use
Holiday decor that did not make the cut this year
Broken toys or electronics that cannot be repaired
Duplicate kitchen tools
Books you will not re-read
If it is still clean and usable, set it aside for donation. Everything else goes in the trash or recycling.
Why This Challenge Works
The magic happens when you do not labor over decisions.
A 10-minute timer encourages you to move quickly and trust your instincts. You get:
Clear boundaries with one bag instead of the whole house
Immediate results
A confidence boost that makes the next step easier
It is a declutter warm-up that is simple, satisfying, and surprisingly effective.
Make It Kid Friendly and Fun
This challenge works beautifully for kids because it is fast, clear, and achievable.
Give each child a bag and have them declutter their room with the same 10-minute timer. They love the challenge, and you may be amazed by what they choose to let go of.
To make it even more fun, try Freeze Dance Decluttering:
Play music while everyone is tidying up.
When the music stops, freeze.
If someone is caught mid pick-up, they earn a point.
The person with the most points wins a small prize such as stickers, choosing dessert, or picking the next family movie.
It turns decluttering into a game instead of a chore, and your home gets a quick reset in the process.
Level Up With the Three-Bag Sprint
If you are feeling motivated, try a quick sprint using three bags: one for trash, one for recycling, and one for donations. Move through a small space and sort as you go. The faster you move, the easier the decisions become.
Bring Your Donation Bag to Declutter Day
If you try the challenge this month, save your donation items for Declutter Day on January 31. You can drop off donations, use the dumpster for anything that cannot be reused, and grab a donut while you clear out your space. It is one of the easiest ways to start the year feeling lighter.
If You Try the Challenge
I would love to hear how it goes. Share your wins, surprises, or the things you did not even realize were still in your home. One bag truly makes a difference.
If you post your challenge on social media, feel free to tag me. It always makes my day to see your progress.
